Architectural and three-tab shingles — the best balance of cost, appearance and proven durability.
Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material on Chicago homes, and for good reason: they balance cost, appearance and durability better than anything else on a sloped roof.
We install high-quality asphalt shingle roofing and help you choose the style and colour to match your home. Before installation we inspect the roof deck and install quality underlayment to prevent moisture problems.
Three-tab shingles are flat, uniform and cheap, with wind ratings around 60 mph and a practical life of 15–20 years. Architectural (dimensional/laminate) shingles are built from multiple bonded layers, which gives them depth, a wind rating of 110–130 mph and a realistic 25–30 year life. In Chicago, where winter wind off the lake is a genuine load case, the price difference is far smaller than the performance difference — and we recommend architectural on nearly every home. Three-tab still makes sense on garages, rentals and outbuildings where up-front cost dominates.
Shingle manufacturers deny warranty claims on improperly installed roofs, and most homeowners never learn this until they need the warranty.

Manufacturers rate architectural shingles at 30–50 years, but those figures assume moderate climate. Under Chicago freeze-thaw, with good ventilation and ice & water shield, expect 25–30 years of real service. Poor attic ventilation can cut that substantially.
Largely aesthetic here — unlike hot southern climates, roof colour has limited energy impact in Chicago. Choose what suits the house and, if you are in a historic district, what the guidelines allow. We will bring samples.
Yes. Localized repairs are routine and cost-effective when the rest of the roof is sound. On an older roof the new shingles will not weather-match perfectly — we will say so upfront.
