Standing Seam vs Corrugated

The two systems solve different problems and cost very differently.

• Standing seam — panels join at raised vertical seams with concealed clips. No fasteners penetrate the weather surface, which is why it is the premium choice and why it lasts 50+ years.
• Corrugated / exposed fastener — panels are screwed through the face into the structure. Considerably cheaper and faster, ideal for garages, shops and industrial buildings, but the neoprene washers need attention every 10–15 years.

Why Metal Works Well in Chicago

Freeze-thaw is what destroys roofs here, and metal is largely immune to it: no granules to lose, no mat to saturate, no sealant strip to fail. A metal roof also sheds snow rather than accumulating it, which reduces both snow load and the standing-meltwater conditions that create ice dams. It is non-combustible, and a standing seam roof handles lake wind better than any shingle system.
