The Detail Everyone Misses

Where a roof edge meets a vertical wall — over a garage, at a dormer, alongside a second storey — there must be a kick-out flashing at the bottom of the step flashing run, diverting water away from the wall and into the gutter. It is a small, inexpensive piece of metal, it is required by code, and it is missing on a startling number of Chicago homes. Without it, every rainfall channels water straight down behind the siding at that corner. The damage stays completely hidden until the sheathing has rotted through. We check for it on every job and add it whenever it is missing.
