Every stage is cheaper to prevent than the one after it. A gutter cleaning costs less than an ice dam removal, which costs less than a ceiling repair, which costs far less than a foundation.
Gutters and Ice Dams Are the Same Conversation
People tend to treat these as separate problems. They are not. A gutter full of frozen debris is a dam at the exact point where meltwater is trying to leave your roof. It does not cause ice dams on its own — attic heat loss does that — but it makes them dramatically worse and it removes the escape route that would otherwise limit the damage.
Clearing gutters before the first freeze is the single cheapest piece of winter roof protection available to a Chicago homeowner.
Sizing and Downspouts Matter More Than People Think
Standard five-inch gutter is adequate for many houses and badly undersized for others. If you have a large roof area draining to a short run, a steep pitch that accelerates runoff, or heavy tree cover, six-inch gutter with larger downspouts is worth the modest extra cost.
Downspouts matter just as much as the gutter. Too few, too small, or discharging right at the foundation and you have moved the problem rather than solved it. Extensions should carry water at least three to five feet from the building — further if the grade slopes back toward it.
The Detail Almost Nobody Has
Where a roof edge meets a vertical wall — above a garage, at a dormer, alongside a second storey — code requires a kick-out flashing at the bottom of the step flashing run. Its job is to throw water away from the wall and into the gutter.
It is a small piece of bent metal, it costs almost nothing, and it is missing on a startling number of Chicago homes. Without it, every rainfall channels water straight down behind the siding at that corner. The damage is completely hidden until the sheathing has rotted through — and by then you are opening a wall, not fixing a flashing.

Are Gutter Guards Worth It?
If you have overhanging trees, quality guards are worth it — not because they eliminate maintenance, but because they dramatically reduce the debris load that seeds the freeze cycle. Fine grit and shingle granules still accumulate, so an annual check is still needed.
Cheap mesh screens that sit loose in the gutter are worse than nothing: they trap debris on top, the water sheets straight over, and you cannot see the blockage to clear it.
A Simple Chicago Gutter Routine
- Late autumn, after leaf drop: clear gutters and downspouts completely. This is the critical one.
- Spring: clear again, check for winter damage, confirm the pitch still runs to the outlets.
- Both times: check that downspout extensions are still in place and directing water away.
- Any time you are up there: look at the fascia for soft spots and staining.
